India’s official Oscar entry Chhello Show (The Last Film Show) made it to the Best Foreign Film shortlist, however, failed to make the cut. It was beaten by ‘Argentina, 1985’ which also beat ‘RRR’ to win Best Picture – Non-English Language at the Golden Globe Awards early this month.
The other nominees in ‘Best Picture-Non English’ category were the Korean romantic mystery film ‘Decision To Leave’, German anti-war drama ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’, and French-Dutch coming-of-age drama ‘Close’.
‘All That Breathes’, and ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ were also shortlisted in the Best Documentary and Best Documentary Short categories.
The Indian films featured in the list of 301 films were eligible for an Oscar nomination. The list was released by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) weeks before the final list of nominees was announced on January 24.
Other films from India that also made it to the reminder list included the Marathi films ‘Me Vasantrao’ and ‘Tujhya Sathi Kahi Hi’, R Madhavan’s ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’, along with ‘Iravin Nizhal’ and ‘Vikrant Rona’.
The films still in the running for an Oscar trophy are ‘The Whale’, ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’, ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’, ‘Elvis‘, ‘The Fabelmans’, ‘Triangle of Sadness’, ‘Women Talking’ and ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’.
